Christopher DeLong, a 29-year-old Columbia Police Department officer and devoted parent of two, died Saturday after responding to a 9:30 a.m. domestic disturbance call in Columbia, South Carolina.

DeLong searched the Southeast region after a reported restraining order violation, then found a matching person near a vehicle by South East Park on Hazelwood Road about an hour later.

At 10:45 a.m., DeLong radioed dispatch for help, and emergency crews took DeLong and Officer David Dymock to the hospital.

DeLong died later that day, while Dymock survived and remained in stable condition.

Family remembered DeLong as a loving spouse, a dedicated parent, a die-hard Gamecocks fan, and someone who had shared life with their partner since age 16.

DeLong graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in January 2025 and served the city for about two years.
